Well it’s well into the year, and I weigh exactly the same as I did at the start of the year.. heh.. but… little wonder. I’ve just discovered the most amazing fabulous cocktail I have EVER tasted. It’s called a toblerone. Yum!! Gotta be fattening though :(

Family Hierlooms

I’m getting ready to sell the house I currently live in, not because I want to move, I have to - my son has been accepted to a really good school next year and the school is an hour’s drive away from here so it will be practical all round to move. So…. the de-cluttering has begun in full swing. I hate moving - especially since I’ve been in this house for more than 11 years now. You can perhaps begin to imagine the amount of junk that has accumulated over the years. Throw three kids into the mix and there’s more mess than is acceptable.

One family ‘treasure’ that I have been responsible for since I was young, is an old ironframe upright piano that my grandmother gave to me when I was seven years old. She got the piano brand new for her 16th birthday - way back in 1910. I have had that piano carted around all over the place ever since and let me tell you it is a significant piece of furniture, and it weighs a ton.

I did actually learn to play the piano, and infact am a qualified piano teacher, but the only keyboard I tap these days is the one in front of my computer screen. Still, I have hung onto the piano, perhaps in the hope that one of my kids would want to learn to play it. No such luck. Child one plays the trombone which suits him because he is mostly full of hot air, girl child plays the flute which suits me because she can lock herself away in her room and practise it, while boy child two unfortunately doesn’t seem to want to play a musical instrument - he plays drums. Argh! There’s one in every family.

So….. I decided that the piano had to go. But, how to dispose of the family hierloom without being struck down by lightning? It’s kind of sad I realise to be 40 years of age and yet still be a little bit scared about what the family will think, but there you go. Luckily, I recalled a cousin who has girls who are about the right age to be interested in learning the piano. A couple of phone calls later saw Master Maori Piano removalist on my doorstep and the old lady out the door on her way to the next chapter in her life at my cousin’s home. I sincerely hope that the old family heirloom brings as much joy and entertainment to her new owners’ lives as it brought to me for more than three decades.

New Age or Old Age?

I went off to the local markets this morning. Wow! There sure is a lot of people into all that New Age stuff. Crystals, tatoos, tarot card readers, you name it. I was keeping an eye on a mature lady - alright about my age, and she was offering to read tealeaves for $20 a pop. Well, I guess at least you get the cuppa thrown in. Everytime I walked past her tent as I lapped the market stalls, I couldn’t help but notice she had a client inside, and another one or two waiting. Hmmmmm…. let’s say on average you could do say 4 readings in an hour, that’s a cool $80 an hour times say 6 hours of reading for the day (I’ve taken out time for breaks etc)… $480 for the day. Do that Saturday and Sunday and you’ve picked up $960 for the weekend. Nice work if you can get it huh? Well… I think it sounds easy, but in practice it’s probably a little bit more difficult. My problem is figuring out what symbols the tealeaves look like. I guess it comes with time. Practice, scarves, bandana, jingly jewelry… ready to become Madame somebodyorother. This might work. The worst that could happen I suppose is that I end up being exposed as a charlatan and get chased out of my tent by reporters from 60 minutes. Yikes!
